Why do we have to Cleanse?

Why is cleansing a MUST in our daily routine?

The skin has a layer known as the Epidermis, which you have probably heard of before. But did you know that it is the outer layer of skin and it has a protective waterproof barrier? It is made up of mainly fine protective layers of dead skin cells and nerve endings. Healthy skin naturally sheds these dead skin cells from our face as new cells are made in deeper layers. However, we need to remove these old dead skin cells through daily cleansing for the application of moisturisers to be fully absorbed and ensure that our skin is not rough, scaly, dry or congested.

Our skin naturally produces sebum (oil from sebaceous glands) and sweat, which sits on this outer layer, giving protection from external factors. We need this combination of natural secretions to protect the Epidermis, which also helps slow down water evaporation. This maintains the water level in the cells at lower levels. On this outer layer we have the Acid Mantle which protects and has a barrier against bacteria, viruses and other potential contaminants. The mantle is combination of acidity and alkalinity which ranges from 0 to 14 pH. Normal healthy skin is somewhat acidic, with a pH balance between 6.5 and 7.5. It is important not to destroy this pH balance (potential hydrogen) which helps to keep the skin supple, smooth and protected.

As important as it is to remove the excess oil which has trapped dust, pollution and perspiration (from sweat glands) into the pores, we also DON’T want to strip the skin of its protective barrier. The more that we strip the skin of its natural protection, the more our oil glands try to produce sebum. The glands can then become overactive which may cause blocked pores, resulting in congestion, blemishes or blackhead…GASP! If you over-wash your face you can also experience the feeling of tightness or a stretched, shiny look. Often this is cause by products containing Sodium Laurel Sulphate or Benzyl Alcohol or synthetics.

Soap or harsh foaming products are not pH compatible which often leaves the skin dry, shiny and flaky. Most foaming products are made from animal, vegetable or synthetic fats/oils and have high alkaline. This leaves those dead skin cells sitting on your skin, when they need to be shed to make room for hydrating and glowing skin! EVOHE Foam Wash has no synthetics so you know it won’t harm your skin!
